Easy Ideas on How to Style a Thrifted Glass Cloche

How to Decorate a Thrifted Cloche; A Fresh and Fun DIY Project

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly yet stylish way to add spring or winter vibes to your home decor, a thrifted cloche could be the perfect project. They’re often inexpensive, come in various sizes, and can be used for different decorating ideas.
While in Santa Cruz last November visiting my son at college, we went thrifting (our favorite thing to do)   I came across some glass cloches, one of them caught my eye and I couldn’t wait to bring it home.

It’s thrift store decor day so make sure you check out all of the amazing makeovers at the end of the post!

These glass cloche domes are often found at secondhand shops, a local flea market, a yard sale, or an antique shop usually marked down to pretty good prices. Mine was $2.99, not bad! They can be transformed into stunning decorative pieces with just a little creativity. I wasn’t sure what direction to go but since it’s been sunny and beautiful here and I have been recovering from the flu I decided to go with Spring.  With a few changes in decor, you can easily change the look to match the season, I have a few more tips below.

Step-by-Step Guide to Decorating a Thrifted Cloche

1. Clean the Cloche

Before you begin styling your cloche, make sure it’s clean. Sometimes, thrifted items can collect dust or have fingerprints from handling. Use a glass cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water to wipe the inside and outside of the cloche to give it a sparkling finish.

2. Choose a Theme

Decide on a theme or a season that fits your style and use seasonal decorations.

3. Add Seasonal Fillers and Layer

Once you’ve chosen your theme, it’s time to add some fillers to the base of the cloche, these could be everyday items you have lying around the house. I kept it simple with a layer of moss a faux nest and bird eggs, a perfect way to welcome spring. Since this did not come with a base and shopped my cupboards for a base.

4. Top It Off with Personal Touches

Once you have the basics in place, add personal touches that make the piece your own. Consider the following:

  • Miniature Figurines: Add small animals, birds, or figurines to fit your theme. They’ll add an extra layer of charm and whimsy.
  • Fairy Lights: A string of battery-powered fairy lights can add a magical touch, especially if you want to create a soft glow in the evening.
  • Bow or Ribbon: Add a bow of ribbon to the neck of the cloche for an extra pop of color simply use hot glue to apply.
  • Create a little vignette surrounding the glass globe with a brass candlestick, real plant, or personalized special items.

5. Display Your Cloche

Once your cloche is decorated, find the perfect spot to display it!

  • Display them on your glass dome cloches on your kitchen island.
  • Tables: Use your cloche as a centerpiece on your dining table, coffee table, or side table.
  • Shelving: Place it on a bookshelf or mantle to add a touch of elegance and interest to your decor.
  • Console Table: The entryway is a great place to add a little charm. Style it next to a vase of fresh flowers for a welcoming look.

Additional Tips:

  • Mix and Match: Try using several cloches in different sizes for a clustered look. This is great for creating a vignette or theme for spring.
  • Update Seasonally: Don’t be afraid to change out the decor inside the cloche as the seasons change! For summer, try adding seashells and driftwood; for fall, swap out the flowers for autumn leaves and small pumpkins.
  • Use during special occasions. Add birthday banners and pictures with mini balloons to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries.
  • Keep It Simple: Sometimes less is more. A simple cloche filled with a single large flower or a small plant can make a beautiful statement.

Other Ideas:

Little faux plants or real small plants and turn it into miniature greenhouses

Burlap or Fabric: A piece of burlap, linen, or floral fabric can be layered at the bottom to give your cloche a rustic or soft, feminine touch.

Sand or Small Pebbles: If you want a beachy vibe, consider adding a thin layer of sand or small pebbles. Add small seashells or even little glass jars to complete the look.

Bottlebrush trees would be perfect for the holiday or winter season sprinkled with faux snow

For a floral look, place flowers in small jars or vases inside the cloche, or arrange them in a cluster with sprigs of greenery.

For an Easter-themed cloche, place a cute bunny figurine in the center, surrounded by pastel eggs or artificial grass.

For a succulent garden, arrange the plants in small pots, creating an arrangement that mimics a mini garden scene.

Decorating a thrifted cloche for spring is a great way to add seasonal charm to your home without breaking the bank. With just a few simple touches, you can transform a secondhand find into a stunning piece of decor that will brighten up any space. Happy decorating!
