Turn a door and a drawer into a pull out trash can
When planning out the kitchen remodel one of the things we chose not to splurge on was a pull-out trash can so we decided to make our own out of a door and drawer. The whole process took about an hour and since we had lots of extra drawers laying around we had all the materials on hand.
First, remove the door and detach any hardware.
Grab a drawer that is just a wee bit smaller than the width of the cabinet door and remove the face.
We happened to have a permanent shelf so he removed the entire shelf using a jig and 3 cuts.
Next you need to attach the drawer to the bottom of the door on the backside.
Add brackets so the trashcan will stay in place.
Add the drawer glides. They will look similar to the ones I show from Amazon below, just make sure it is the correct dimensions for the cabinet.
Voila, insert the trashcan and enjoy having the trash out of site!
So glad to have a hidden trash can! Next up on the kitchen is hardware, paint the island and countertops. We are very slowly cleaning all the grout on the floor and resealing but my back can only handle so much. We are so close, I can’t wait!

That’s a great idea for making your own. I purchased the pull out trash can from Lowe’s (it comes complete with the trash can and all the hardware and slides) and attached the door to it but I could have saved about $75 by making my own with your instructions!!

Fantastic DIY! We have one of these too, but ours was the “buy it at Lowes” kind. Either way they’re fantastic and I know you’ll love it! And I also know you spent way less $$ on yours than I did! 🙂

So, you need an extra drawer, right? As in, I couldn’t just do this with existing kitchen cabinets?
For the way we put it together you would need an extra drawer. However, I have seen other’s build one without a drawer, check pinterest 🙂

Did you have any problem with the cable in the back? We have the same issue because we have a cooktop on the island, and hopefully I’ll have room. Do the other doors slide out?
Our microwave is actually on the opposite side so it did not interfere with the trashcan. The other doors don’t pull out and there isn’t much room since the microwave takes up most of the space.
I have always wanted to buy one of these trash cabinets. It is a good idea to make it myself because I will save a lot of money. Thank you for the interesting post!
This is so great! I’ve been planning to “hack” a pull out trash can in our future kitchen remodel this summer and was wondering what the width of this cabinet is. I’m looking to do it with a 12″ cabinet, but am not sure it will work yet, so I’m doing some research!

Can you provide more details about the parts you used to make your system – particularly the L brackets used to attach the door. We’ve ruined two sets of slides and our box is pulling away from the door!

Great idea! I spent a bundle on our pull out trash door. It now does not work well. Can you tell me how or what you used for you your draw to slide on thats in the bottom of the cabinet?
