How to Make Peppermint Shower Steamers Using Peppermint Essential Oil
If you’re not much of a bath person but still want the spa-like experience of bath bombs, peppermint shower steamers are the perfect alternative. These diy shower steamers release the invigorating scent of peppermint essential oil during a hot shower, creating a refreshing and soothing aromatherapy experience. They’re great homemade gifts, easy to make in batches, and wonderful for stress relief and seasonal allergies.
They are a fantastic alternative to those who only have time for a quick shower!

INGREDIENTS/Materials Needed
1/3 cup distilled water or regular water (or more up to 1/2 cup)
10-12 drops of essential peppermint oil
Wilton candy cane icing decorations
Optional: a few drops of eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, or lemon pure essential oil for added aromatherapy benefits
Optional: organic food coloring or dried herbs for decoration
Airtight container or mason jar for storage
Alternatively, you can follow this direction for more of a textured steamer
- ½ cup Epsom salts
- ½ cup baking soda
- 2 tbsp water
- 20 drops of peppermint essential oil

Step-by-Step Instructions
Mix the ingredients.
Add the baking soda to a large metal or glass mixing bowl.
Begin by mixing in 1/4 cup of water. Add slightly more and stir, as needed, until the mixture resembles damp sand.
Slowly add the water as you don’t want to add too much accidentally!
Add essential oils.
Add your peppermint essential oil to the mixture. You can also include eucalyptus oil for nasal congestion or lavender essential oil for relaxation. The scent of peppermint offers health benefits, including clearing a stuffy nose, promoting alertness, and providing natural relief for mild headaches.
Mold your shower steamers.
Press the shower bomb mixture firmly into your silicone mold. Smooth the tops with your fingers or a spoon. You can add dried herbs or a few drops of citrus oils, such as orange oils or lemon essential oil, for a refreshing twist.
Add Candy Cane
Let the steamers sit in a dry place for 24 hours, away from direct sunlight. Once hardened, remove them from the molds and store shower steamers in an airtight container or mason jar. Keep them in a dark place until ready to use.

How to Use Shower Steamers
To use shower steamers, place one at the bottom of the shower, out of direct water flow but close enough to the stream of water to activate it. As the hot water hits the steamer, it will fizz and release the peppermint scent into the air, turning your regular shower into a home spa experience. Avoid direct contact with skin to prevent irritation.
Tips for Best Results
-
Use shower steamers during a steamy shower or at the end of your shower time for maximum aromatherapy benefits.
-
Keep out of reach of children and store in a cool, dry place.
-
The best place for storage is somewhere away from moisture to maintain easy use and long-lasting freshness. Place them in a glass jar or a mason jar. They can last anywhere between 2-6 months when stored correctly.
-
If you enjoy different scents, try creating essential oil shower steamers with lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus oils for a similar effect.

Hello, I made a ‘steamer’ using corn starch added to the baking soda, and am hoping this one turns out better. The corn starch batch took forever to dry.
Let me know how it works for you, thanks for stopping by!
This looks so good! What a great gift to make for friends or to enjoy yourself!
Thank you Suzanne!
Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
In the shower it will last around 5-10 minutes. After you have made them, store in a cool and dry place. You could place them in a glass jar, mason jar or saran wrap and they can last anywhere between 2-6 months when stored correctly. Possibly even longer if you placed them in the refrigerator.
What a great gift idea, thankyou for sharing on Whimsy Home Wednesday!
These are so pretty, Kristin! I could definitely see these as a great gift for family members and besties, too! I need to make some for myself! I’ll be featuring your post at Tuesday Turn About this week! Pinned!
Thank you Julie, you are so sweet!!!
Can I use real candy canes cracked on top? We do not have Wilton products at our store here. Small town hazard.
Hi Fernie-
I don’t see why not, they might get a little sticky in the water, so if your handing them out as gifts maybe let them know to take the candy cane off before using. Let me know how it works 🙂
Does it have to be distilled water?
You can use regular Kelly 🙂
The smell does not seem to be very strong I guess I can as much as I want?
Hi Dana-
Yes, feel free to add more or less depending on your liking, Happy Holidays!
I made a batch to give as gifts. I let them harden in my freezer as we are having a warm winter. And as soon as I took them out of the muffin tin they fell apart. Any suggestions?
Oh no, I’m so sorry that happened. The only thing I can think of is placing them in the freezer caused them to crumble. I would only place them in the fridge.
I’m using a tin muffin tin. I hope the steamers come out easy.
Hi Geo, I have not made them in a tin muffin but I would suggest you Line the muffin tin with cupcake liners. This will allow for the shower steamers to mold properly and you can easily remove them. Hope it works!
