Thrift Store Makeovers for Budget-Friendly Home Décor
Our Thrift Store Decor Team is closing out the year by showcasing our very best thrift store transformations! We’ve been breathing new life into secondhand treasures—turning “unsightly” pieces into something fresh and beautiful for years now.
Looking back, it’s incredible to see how many items that might have been tossed in the dumpster (or left abandoned on the roadside!) have been reimagined into something worth keeping.

Thrift Store Makeovers for Budget-Friendly Home Décor
There’s something magical about walking into thrift stores, flea markets, or even garage sales and spotting secondhand items with so much potential. With a little creativity and a few diy projects, you can give old items a completely new life and transform your living space without spending much. Thrift store finds are one of the best ways to decorate your own home on a budget, and the results can look just as beautiful as brand-new items from a high-end shop.
Thrift shopping has become incredibly popular thanks to TikTok – make this, flip that, and turn thrifted finds into unique pieces that fit your decor styles. It’s a great way to create a cozy home while keeping your wallet happy. The best part is that thrift shops, yard sales, and antique stores are full of hidden gems just waiting for someone to notice them.
I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite projects—just click the link to head straight to the tutorial. And don’t miss the grand finale: Over 50 thrift store makeovers waiting for you at the end of the post!
I have to say the one makeover that has given me the most JOY this year is my Bundt Pan Bird Feeder. Each visit from different birds feels like a small gift, reminding you that nature thrives even in simple spaces!

Why Thrift Store Makeovers Are So Rewarding
One of my favorite things about thrifted home decor is how personal it feels. When you bring home home decor pieces from a local thrift store or Salvation Army, you’re not just buying something; you’re giving it a repurposed life. A little love, a fresh coat of paint, or even a little spray paint can turn old items into statement pieces that fit perfectly in your dining room or living space.
Many secondhand items are still in good condition, and with a soft cloth, a paint brush, or a touch of Rub N Buff, they can look completely new. It’s a creative way to decorate your home at affordable prices, and it’s also a great example of sustainable living. Next time you’re out thrift shopping, take a quick look at the book section, wicker basket aisle, or small tables area. You never know what vintage treasures you’ll find.
My Favorite Makeovers from the Team
I love this Shadowbox Thermastat Cover from Exquisitely Unremarkable! These necessary but not-so-pretty covers can mess with your decor a little, but Kim came up with a great solution, and I love the paper she used. I did something similar years ago, don’t worry, when we actually use the thermastat, the covers come off!

Shop at Blu made over this Vintage wooden box, creating a chippy look that she found in Elizabethton. Now that I have family in TN, I can’t wait to go thrifting, but how will I get everything home, lol.

My Repurposed Life sure gave this Drop-Leaf Table a beautiful makeover! Using a deglosser and a gorgeous coat of dark paint, this small pedestal drop leaf table is perfect for an eat-in kitchen or a single person. I had one of these from my grandparents that I sure wish I had kept for the kids!

Christy from Our Southern Home always finds the greatest items while thrifting! She is showing us how to restore a Vintage Thrift Store Mirror by stripping, toning down the orange oak with a custom Minwax mix, and sealing it in a soft matte finish. What a beauty!

Easy Thrift Store Makeovers Anyone Can Try
Picture frames are one of the easiest thrift store makeovers. They’re usually inexpensive, and with a little elbow grease and a color scheme that matches your home, they can become beautiful home accents. Vintage books from a vintage shop can be stacked for seasonal decor or used to add height to displays. Faux florals can be tucked into a wicker basket for a charming centerpiece. Even such item as an old ornament can become new decor with a little creativity.
Small tables are another great find. A first coat of paint, followed by a second for best results, can turn a worn-out piece into something fresh and modern. If you’re feeling adventurous, try mixing decor styles to create something truly unique. Thrifted decor is the only way to get one-of-a-kind pieces at a great price.
Looking back, it’s incredible to see how many items might have been tossed in the dumpster (or left abandoned on the roadside)! These makeovers prove that beautiful décor doesn’t have to break the bank.

What I love most about these projects is how seamlessly they fit into home décor. With a little creativity, a dated lamp, a scratched side table, or a worn picture frame can be transformed into something chic and timeless. The best part? They’re incredibly inexpensive, yet once they’re styled in your home, no one would ever guess they came from a thrift store. These pieces look like boutique finds, but they cost just a fraction of the price.

When you’re in Nashville, you should check out SMART, it’s a charitable craft donation store! My daughter Jamie loves it. In fact she’s there right now for DOLLAR days and asked if she should get a CAMEO ($1)
