You’ve Been Booed – Free Printable Halloween Tags
One of my favorite Halloween traditions is the You’ve Been Booed game. This was one of my favorite things to do with the kids when they were little during October. It’s a fun way to surprise friends, neighbors, and family with a basket of treats and spread some Halloween cheer. This activity has become popular in neighborhoods all over the country, and the best part is that it works for the whole family and the entire neighborhood. I certainly miss those days, but I love passing out candy and seeing all the little ones dressed up.
To make it easy, I’ve created free printable tags you can download instantly and use this Halloween season. These printable gift tags are a simple way to decorate your boo bucket, boo bag tag, or gift bag without spending a lot of money.

What is You’ve Been Booed?
If you’re new to this Halloween tradition, here’s how it works:
- Put together a boo bucket or gift bag filled with Halloween treats, small gifts, or sweet surprises.
- Attach one of the free printable tags (or printable signs) so the person knows they’ve been booed.
- Leave it secretly at their front door, front window, or porch, ring the bell, and run.
- They then create their own boo basket and surprise someone else—spreading Halloween cheer through the whole neighborhood.
It’s basically a spooky version of Secret Santa for Halloween.
What to Put in a Boo Basket
The fun part is filling your basket, bag, or bucket with cute gifts and Halloween goodies. You don’t need to spend a lot—check out Dollar Tree, the Target dollar spot, or your local dollar store for budget-friendly items.
Here are some ideas for your boo bag:
- Halloween candy or small treats
- Glow sticks or fun toys
- Halloween stickers or trinkets
- Mini Halloween decor pieces, love these bats
- A bottle of wine for adult neighbors
- Small toys or sweet treats for kids
- Halloween socks
If you’re crafty, you can also make things like fabric bags with embroidered details or handmade boo signs.
The Easiest Way to Boo People
The easiest way to start this tradition is to grab the free printable tags (available as a printable PDF for personal use below) and some Halloween goodies. Print a few extra copies so you can keep the Halloween spirit going all October long.
Just download the digital files, print them on cardstock, cut them out, and attach them to your gift bag, treat bag, or goodie bag. If you’d rather, you can also have them printed at a local shop.

The best part is seeing surprises left on doorsteps, cute gifts hanging from doorknobs, and festive treats popping up everywhere. It’s also a great way to connect with neighbors during the Halloween season without hosting a big event.
Even if you only have a little time, it’s fun to do on Halloween night or in the days leading up to it.
