Before

Materials Needed:

  • An old sweater (preferably in Valentine’s colors like red, pink, white, or even a cute pattern)
  • Needle and thread or a sewing machine.
I love my brother’s brand sewing machine!
  • An old pillow (you can reuse the filling or the whole pillow)  You can find one at your local thrift store
  • Scissors (you can find great scissors at your local craft store)
  • Fabric glue (optional for a no-sew version)
  • Pins or clips to hold the fabric in place
  • Measuring tape or ruler

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Gather Your Materials

Start by finding an old sweater you no longer wear. I bought this fun sweater about 6 years ago but the collar stretched out and just looked a little funny when I wore it, such a bummer since it was my favorite sweater during the month of February.

 Cut the Sweater

Turn the sweater inside out and lay your sweater flat on a cutting surface. First I cut off the sleeves so I was working with a rectangle. Next, measure your pillow and add about 2 extra inches on all sides to ensure room for sewing or glue. Mark the sweater with chalk and cut.

Prepare the Sweater Sewing

Once you’ve cut the sweater, pin the edges of the fabric together, leaving one side open for inserting the pillow.

 Sew the Pillow

With your sweater fabric pinned, sew around the edges using a sewing machine or a simple needle and thread giving it a finished edge. Leave an opening wide enough to insert the pillow. You can opt for a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch, depending on the type of look you want. If you prefer a no-sew version, you can also use fabric glue to attach the edges together (make sure to let it dry thoroughly). Once your sweater is sewn into a pouch, turn it right side out. (My material had lots of stretch, so I was able to sew the top part halfway)

Optional: Valentine’s Day Embellishments

For that extra touch of Valentine’s Day charm, you can personalize your pillow with fun embellishments. I cut a not so perfect heart (don’t look too closely) out of old pieces of fabric and sewed them on the front of the pillow.  That way the back of the pillow could be used any time of the year without the hearts showing. I simply sewed along the edge of the heart using my sewing machine.

Insert the Pillow

You should now have a cozy sweater pillow cover. Insert the old pillow into the sweater cover.

Close the Opening

Once you’ve added the old pillow, fold in the edges of the open side and sew it shut or use fabric glue. If you’re sewing, a simple hand stitch will keep everything secure. If you’re using glue, carefully press the fabric edges together and allow the glue to dry.

Helpful Tip:

I remember sewing my first pillow years ago and it was a little intimidating.  If this is your first time, you could practice using a couple of pieces of paper, there are printable sewing practice sheets you can download, perfect for those learning how to sew. You’ve got this!

Final Thoughts:

And there you have it! A cozy, beautiful pillow made from an old sweater and an old pillow. This DIY project is a great way to upcycle materials, save money, and create something special for your home this Valentine’s season. Whether you place it on your couch, bed, or favorite reading chair, your new pillow will bring a warm and heartfelt touch to your decor.

Bonus Tip: If you want to make multiple pillows, consider using a variety of old sweaters in different colors and patterns to mix and match. It’s a fun way to get creative and add more Valentine’s Day spirit throughout your home!

Happy crafting and enjoy your handmade Valentine’s Day pillow!
