Replacing Windows With Sliding Glass Doors
Bring The Outdoors In With Sliding Patio Doors — Our Honest Take
What we really discovered after installing panoramic doors in our San Diego home — the good, the surprising, and what we’d tell every homeowner first.
Some ideas live in your head for years before they become reality. This one lived in mine for over eight years.
There was never anything wrong with our home — I truly love it. It’s where we’ve raised our three kids and created so many beautiful memories over the years.
When we knocked the wall down 19 years ago, furniture placement became a real challenge. Even with plenty of square footage, the room didn’t flow as well as it could have. A long, open floor plan requires a completely different approach to furniture placement, scale, and defining each zone — and it can be quite the challenge. It always felt like we were leaving some of the potential of our great room overlooked.
Opening up the space by adding sliders completely changed that. Not only does the furniture layout finally work, but the view, natural light, and outdoor living area now feel like an extension of the entire home. The outdoor space became part of the room rather than something separate from it.
The biggest question was whether we were staying or moving. And when we finally said yes, we’re staying — that was the green light. And in 2025, the plans finally began.
Eight years in the making — and worth every single one of them.
But let’s take a look at the before…
When we installed the moving glass walls, it changed everything about how we use and experience our home. This is our real take — what worked, what surprised us, and what we wish someone had told us before we started.
Why we chose sliding glass doors over every other option
Traditional hinged and in-swing doors eat into your floor space. French doors are beautiful, but require swing space we didn’t have. Sliding glass doors were the right answer — a smooth transition, no swing space required, and maximum glass area to flood the room with natural light.
We love the seamless transition they create between indoor and outdoor areas. With our warmer climate, we wanted that connection to feel effortless. The sliding system on panoramic doors operates effortlessly, and the expansive glass panels ensure that the view remains entirely clear even when the doors are shut. However, these doors are quite heavy, making them easy to slide open, though a bit of strength is required to close them. We looked at several different door options, and some appeared somewhat cheap when the glass was thin. These doors are robust and make an impression.
One of our favorite things about the panoramic doors — and something we didn’t fully appreciate until we were living with them — is the flexibility of how you open them. We love that you have the option to open 1 door for easy access to the outside, open two glass panels for an easy flow in and out and fresh air, open all three for a wide passage, or push them all the way back for a completely open connection between the indoors and the outside. It’s that last option — fully open — that truly takes your breath away every single time.
Before
After
The biggest surprise: how much bigger the room feels
We expected more light. We expected easier access to the backyard patio. What we did not expect was how dramatically the room would feel like it doubled in size. The visual connection to the outdoor spaces genuinely extends the eye line of the room. Your brain reads the backyard as part of the living space, and suddenly your interior feels twice as expansive.
The tinted glass — a game changer we didn’t know we needed
Our glass panels came tinted, and this turned out to be one of the best features of the whole installation. During the day, the abundance of natural light pours in beautifully — but you can’t really see into the home from outside. Privacy during daylight hours is simply not an issue.
We do have a trail behind our property, so this was actually important to us. Walkers and cyclists pass by regularly, and we never feel exposed. The tinted glass options give you that open, connected feeling without sacrificing your sense of privacy in your own home.
One honest note: at night, when interior lights are on, visibility reverses — it’s easier to see in from outside. This is just the nature of tinted glass and something to plan for. Our solution was adding drapes for nighttime privacy, which also added a beautiful layered design element to the room.
Get the screen. Seriously, just get the screen.
If there is one piece of advice we give every single person who asks us about our panoramic doors, it is this: get the screen door. We are in San Diego — the weather is incredible and we want those doors open as much as possible. Without a screen, that means bugs. With the screen, we get all the benefits of open indoor and outdoor areas, the fresh air, the natural lighting, and the connection to the backyard patio — without inviting every moth and mosquito in the neighborhood inside.
We were lucky enough to receive a free screen when we purchased our doors — so definitely ask about that when you’re shopping, because it’s worth it either way. Ours turned out to be a light filtering screen, which is honestly such a bonus on a bright sunny day. It takes the edge off the afternoon sun while still keeping that beautiful unobstructed connection to the outdoor space. You get the airflow, the view, and just enough shade — all at once.
A good quality screen is practically invisible. It feels like the doors are open to the outdoor living space with nothing in between. We cannot imagine living without it now.
The screen in action — fresh air in, bugs out, view completely unobstructed.
Get it. Non-negotiable for indoor-outdoor living. Keeps bugs out while keeping the view completely clear.
Daytime privacy is excellent. Plan for nighttime with drapes or shades — it’s worth it.
Tinted glass helps with energy costs — less heat gain means lower energy bills in warmer climates.
Keep the track clean for smooth operation. A monthly quick clean is all it takes.
Entertaining is a completely different experience
This was the original dream when we decided to install sliding glass doors — and it absolutely delivered. Entertaining used to mean guests clustering inside or clustering outside, with an awkward back-and-forth through a small door. Now the two spaces are genuinely one. People flow naturally between the living room and the backyard BBQ area without even thinking about it. The swivel chairs make all the difference in the world. You can be part of the conversation inside or out by just swinging your chair around.
Food comes off the grill and lands on the indoor table in seconds. Guests can chat with whoever is cooking without shouting through a wall. The easy access and smooth operation of the sliding mechanism means the door practically disappears from the entertaining experience — which is exactly what you want.
The great room flowing seamlessly into the outdoor entertaining space.
The swivel chairs — perfect for turning toward the view or toward your guests.
The outdoor space that inspired it all
Part of what made this investment feel so right was having an outdoor living area worth connecting to. The olive trees, the BBQ setup, the string lights overhead — all of it visible through those large glass panels from the moment you walk into the room. The contemporary design of the black frames against the warm California landscape creates a visual that never gets old.

What nobody tells you about the installation
Every company will tell you this is an easy two-day project — one day of demo, one day of install. And technically, that’s true. But what they don’t always walk you through is everything that comes after.
On the outside, once the old wall comes out, you’re left with exposed stucco that needs to be patched and blended — and then painted to match. On the inside, you’re looking at new drywall, painting, and then reinstalling all of your trim work — the molding, the crown molding, and a trim piece along the floor to create that seamless, finished look. None of that happens in two days.
The inside after installation — drywall, paint and trim still to come before it looks finished.
The exterior during the process — more involved than it looks from the outside.
Our situation had an extra layer too — the outside of the house was completely filled with plants and mature palms. Everything had to be removed before any work could even begin. And once it was done, we were left with bare dirt where a lush garden used to be.
We didn’t want to spend a fortune, and we definitely didn’t want to try to match 25-year-old concrete — so we added pavers instead. It was the right call and we love how it turned out. Eventually we’ll stain the existing concrete to match the paver color and tie it all together. But one project at a time!
The pavers — a budget friendly solution that looks anything but.
The outside before — you can see what we were working with before the pavers went in.
And on the inside — same story. Here’s what the space looked like before, and after all the drywall, paint, trim, and molding work was done:
Before — Inside
After — Inside
Here’s a look at the process from start to finish — because sometimes seeing it in real time makes all the difference:
Step 1 — Demo Day
Step 2 — Boarded Up Overnight
Step 3 — Doors Going In
Step 4 — Installation Complete
