Painters Drop Cloths As Outdoor Drapes

I have to say it was a perfect weekend! The weather was gorgeous, we were able to spend time with wonderful friends, good wine, good food, good conversation, it really doesn’t get much better! We are pretty fortunate here in San Diego to have such amazing weather. When the first signs of spring appear I can’t wait to turn our backyard into our little slice of heaven and hang up the drapes!

Last spring I purchased the Home Depot drop cloths on sale, two for $10. I gave them a hem, spray painted some pipes bronze and my hubby hung them for me. Now we can block the sun from any direction and it’s like our outdoor living room. Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon, wine at sunset, we use it so much.

It was one of the easiest projects and one that gets so much use! So hopefully before Summer arrives you can grab some painter drop cloths and make a little outdoor room! Trust me, when you see the prices for the sumbrella fabric you’ll thank me.

This is how we secured them to the house.

This right here is what it’s all about!

Have a wonderful day and thanks for stopping by!

  1. Kristin, you made my day with these! I so need to do something like this to give our deck some privacy and a little upgrade until we can replace it. LOVE this and thank you so much! Have an awesome week! 🙂

    1. We bought the extra large ones, can’t remember the exact size. Once you know your measurements you can by the tarp based on the length needed.

  2. It’s a cool idea. Are they tarps or canvas ? I am wondering how the tarps fold like a cloth and they look soft and not plastic-y like tarp..

  3. Can you tell me how did you hang them, what hardware did you use and what did you use for curtain rods.

So excited to try this out

    1. Hi Paula- I spray painted some pipes that I found at home depot that we cut to size. The last two pictures show the hardware we used to hang the pipes, hope that helps!

  4. Awesome, I’m checking it out this week, we just put a “new to us ” hot tub in and privacy would be GREAT.

Any secrets for outdoor rug? Yours is awesome!

  5. Love your patio and outdoor curtians. The drop cloths are great for making many other things for around the house. I have used them to make slip covers for my furniture. I was going to make outdoor curtians out of drop cloth as well. I decided to check out our local thrift shop and bingo I hit the jack pot. I found a bolt and a huge bolt of durable fabric for only 35.00 dollars. I have made curtians with it for our patio, used it to cover our outdoor furniture and still have plently more yardage for table cloths when we need them. I love how you used the hardware to hang them. I have used brackets and its hard to remove them for washing. I will be changing the hardware out to how you have it.

    1. They are not waterproof but you could spray a waterproof seal on them. I just throw them in the wash a few times a year 🙂

  6. We hung some of those drop cloths around our hot tub deck (for good looks AND privacy). We have to leave them up all year, since we use the hot tub more in the winter. Unfortunately, they now have some mildew on them. (They also get hit with the sprinklers.) Does anyone know how to get those black mildew stains out of them?

  7. I simply love your painters drop cloth curtains. Why didn’t I think of that? I’ve been reluctant to make curtains for our deck due to cost, but now I have the answer. Thank you and Gods blessing on you.

    1. Yes, my machine worked just fine. I did not have to hem because the space if very high, in some spaces you will have too.

  8. After I initially commented I clicked the -Notify me when new feedback are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get 4 emails with the identical comment. Is there any approach you possibly can take away me from that service? Thanks!

    1. Yes, I’m looking into it right now, so sorry for the inconvenience, this has never happened before and you are the second person to let me know..Thank you for telling me!
