Good to be home and Inspire Me Monday

~Hi Friends~
My goodness, what a trying past week it has been. Waking up last Monday to temps in the 100’s, no humidity, a severe drought and extreme Santa Ana winds I was nervous. I had that pit way down in my stomach because I knew it was coming and I didn’t know how long it would last.  I have lived in San Diego my whole life and have seen the devastation too many times with this deadly combination.

Sadly, by Tuesday fire had erupted and by Wednesday we had 9 separate fires burning, 1 just minutes from our home.

Sure enough the evacuation call came in and the sheriff stopped by telling us to get out. It seemed like yesterday when we were faced with the Harmony Fire and were evacuated in the middle of the night. I hadn’t packed much this time around, just a few days worth of clothes, all the large family photo’s on the wall, albums and documents, nothing else really seemed important.

The boys and I with the 2 dogs and the fish left home and I was strangely at peace.  I had everything that was important in my car, everything else was just stuff…..yes, stuff…

Sadly, Ray was back East but wonderful friends and family refused to let us be alone.  I made the decision to go where I thought the boys would be most comfortable which was with our neighbors to their sister’s house about 10 minutes away.  Their family was gone in Tahoe and graciously let us stay for as long as we needed, I can’t thank them enough! We sat glued to the news watching the devastation unfold all around us. By Friday night we were allowed back home and home had never felt so good.

It didn’t take long for the community to respond to the needs of families who lost everything in the devastating fires. Thousands of dollars and items have been donated which is incredible in such a short amount of time.  Because of the amazing first responders,  fire fighters, sheriffs and incredible air support like what is pictured below lives were saved and losses were in the hundreds versus the thousands like in years past.

I know this won’t be the last time we will be in this situation but you can’t replace the fabulous neighbors and community that we are surrounded by.  For that reason, we will never leave because we have everything that matters, family!

Thank you to everyone for your messages over the past week, it truly means so much to us!

  6. Wow, how horrifying. I just can’t imagine packing up like that and not knowing what you’ll come home to when it’s all said and done. You’re right, though. It’s a good reminder of what’s important. Glad to hear everyone is okay.

  7. As a wife married to a firefighter who would stand to protect your house I want to say THANK YOU for evacuating when told to! The stories of homeowners vowing to stay to save their house would amazing you, and in the end the firefighters will end up having to save the homeowner instead of trying to save their property! I hope all is well and you are settled back in your home soon!
