I’ve been asked a number of times by some wonderful readers how I keep a family of 5 with 2 dogs organized. I’ll admit, I go in waves and it’s not always easy but having a organized home just feels good!
I thought this would be a perfect time to start a little series on organization. I will be showing one room a day and giving you tips about keeping organized. Like everything else in life you have to keep on top of it once you get your system down.
So lets start with the play room, get your kids involved with this project. It’s a great way to hold them accountable for keeping the toys picked up and kept in their appropriate spot.
First things first
Contain and control, consider setting toy boundaries. Keep the toys in a playroom, the kids room, the basement or their bedroom
Sort, store and simplify
Label, label, label!
I have to say a label maker is a necessity. They aren’t that expensive and it is the perfect tool for so many projects!
I have found using shelves with clear bins of different sizes work the best. The kids will have easy viewing this way. Label everything with words if they can read or pictures for younger children. The kids love crafts. All of the scissors, crayons, pens, paper are all accessible to them to grab anytime.
All of the kids learning supplies have their own cabinet.
This is the part that makes me crazy. The TOY SECTION! I make the kids go through their toys about twice a year. They have to decide what they don’t play with anymore and either have a garage sale or donate it. Meanwhile when they aren’t around I go through it as well.
Larger tubs, laundry baskets and barrels are perfect for holding blocks, trains car tracks, etc.
A toy bin for larger items that they play with on a daily basis
Game night anyone?
The hanging stuffed animal holder is functional and cute!
These two items here are my lifesavers. I can’t tell you how many times I find game pieces all around the house. The clear plastic bag houses all the random pieces I find. When we pull the game out we know where to find the missing pieces.
I can’t tell you how many wasted hours I’ve spent cleaning up after other people’s kids. The lock has been my lifesaver!
A few pictures just for fun!

You might be asking yourself why isn’t she showing us a picture of the whole playroom. It will soon become the mudroom/playroom/moms craft room. I’ve been working on some drawings and hope to come up with a solution soon to share with you!
