DIY Planted Succulents in a Basket~Fun in the Sun~

It’s Summertime which means lots of gardening for me! I’ve been busy planting lots of vegetables, flowers and succulents for our annual “Fun in the Sun” party featuring a fabulous group of talented ladies. I have a love for these awesome plants because they are almost impossible to kill and require very little maintenance, huge bonus!

I thought it would be fun to put together a basket full of succulents for our back patio space, I may even eventually hang it by our front door!

Succulents

Here are the supplies you’ll need to re-create this look:

Basket
Variety of succulents
Heavy Plastic or coconut husk liners
Soil, cactus soil is the best

I simply grabbed a old basket from the garage and gave it a fresh coat of paint.  Next I cut some holes into the plastic so the soil can drain easily and lined the basket.  I filled it with dirt and began adding my succulents.

Next I arranged each of the succulents, making sure to add height in the back and have the overhanging succulents in the front.  I have been lucky enough to never have had to purchase a succulent.  I always take a few trimmings from my brother’s house when I visit and within a few weeks I have a abundance of them and plant them in various containers.

Next I gave the succulents some water and won’t have to worry about watering again for a few more days.  I’m sure the basket won’t last for more then a few years but I’ll just transplant all the beauties!

  1. I love your basket of succulents, Kristin. I have never had succulents myself but my mother always had a lot of them. She had one stone wall covered with hens&chicks. All the neighbors would get “starts” from her. I may have to do this- I have an old basket exactly like yours. Hope you have a great day- xo Diana
